I just saw a definition for fear: “False Evidence Appearing Real.” I think it describes the situation so well. Living with an abuser gives you a different world view and it does not really reflect what YOU CAN DO on your own. Instead it becomes easy to adopt the faulty logic of the abuser. So, yes, women are often afraid of being alone, but it is amazing how much help and support is out there if you make the first step and keep going. You may not get half of what you contributed and you may leave your belongings behind, but what you have is priceless: peace, safety, and the integrity to live your life. And, with practice, you can become comfortable alone at movies, dinner, church and elsewhere. In addition, you give your children the same peace that you will find, and they will be glad for it as adults. Tape record any threatening calls and document them–and keep the info in a safe place. If the authorities and lawyers in your area are not supportive, then you may need to go further afield.
